Conflicted…

by Lon on May 14, 2008

I’ve spent most of my journey with Jesus with a go-until-you-get-a-no philosophy.  The last six years of my life were well planned ahead and have more or less worked out accordingly.  I believe in the sovereignty of God, but I also believe in doing my part, and being diligent with the mind and creativity God has given me.

However, at this particular juncture, I’ve been feeling the need to hear afresh from God.  I’ve been spending dedicated time in prayer, meditation, fasting, all of that… and no booming voice from the sky.  Now, it’s highly likely I’m in denial with the way God’s been speaking in terms of people and opportunities before me, but c’mon God, you’re capable of direct calls…

I’m also conflicted because I barely believe in what I’ve been trained in the last while.  Seminary, ‘professional’ ministry, and the church as it is, bothers me to be honest.  Great for many, but I really don’t know about my place in it all.

Having said that, I love Jesus, being a part of what He’s doing, and the possibilities of His church, more than ever.

I also really need to start finding a way to pay the bills!

‘old school’ preachin’

by Lon on April 6, 2008

I’ve written a number of posts on my concerns and issues with preaching, but I’ve got to admit there are a some pluses to ‘old school’ preaching…

The community has the opportunity to live an ongoing narrative through a certain person. The story always picks up where it left off, and as long as the preacher is growing, the congregation can easily follow along.

Having a primary voice speaking each week, makes the community easy to define. Listeners will often describe their church by the lead-voice, which in turn, can create a distinct culture that community members strive to live towards.

Maybe I’m insecure, but when I’m speaking in new places I often feel the need to give it all, partially because I don’t want people to think “that’s all he’s got?”. As an ongoing communicator in the community, there’s less of a need to go at things from all sides and angles, trusting that people know better or you’ll have plenty of opportunities to flesh out what’s on your heart.

If one of your primary tasks is speaking, it really gets easier and better the more you do it.

Having said all that, the above can also lead to unhealthy, narrow-minded, lemming-like communities with uni-dimensional, performance-based, preachers.

Beincarnation

by Lon on February 8, 2008

Do you believe in Beincarnation?

I heard this creative term a number of years ago and it’s never left me.

Similar to my post on tantric preaching, beincarnation co-opts another traditionally ‘Eastern’ term – Reincarnation. I’ll assume that’s okay since Jesus was an eastern teacher…

Reincarnation is driven by the cosmic judgment of your deeds in this life. Every person is in karmic bondage with a soul that longs for liberation from this world. It is cyclical in nature until you are disconnected from all desires and reach nirvana. In this heaven-like state you are finally transformed, at peace, and no longer subject to human suffering.

Be-incarnation is a response to the incarnation of Christ. Transformation begins in this life, not the next. Beincarnation is where followers of Jesus become the hands, and feet, and voice of Christ. Beincarnation is where our own unique identity and the character of Christ converge.

With Beincarnation the goal is not to leave this world, but to bind ourselves to it, as we take upon human suffering and become bringers of peace in this life. Beincarnation is not a suppression of desires, but an unleashing of passion, shaped by Jesus.

Be Incarnation. Be.incarnation. What are you waiting for?
