Magazines I read…

by Lon on November 19, 2008

Steven Sample states in “The contrarian’s guide to leadership” for leaders to avoid news and magazines and stick with super texts (books that have stood the test of time over 400 years).

I can’t help myself.

Besides the revolving news and trends online, here are some print magazines that I’ll go on record for shaping me these past years.

Got other suggestions?

Technology update

by Lon on September 2, 2008

Here’s my latest technology update that helps me in life, ministry, mission, etc.

- I’m on google chrome (their new browser), right now.  It rocking so far.  You can read the comic book they released describing what’s behind it here

- A new google picasa v3 is to be released today as well, with synchronization and facial recognition.

- I’ve switched from using Microsoft OneNote and Google Notebook, to evernote.  It doesn’t have onenote’s snazzy tabs, but it allows me to sync my laptop, desktop, and online notes finally.

- In preparation for the event, I researched online ticketing and discovered brown paper tickets, eventbrite, and money transfer through paypal.  All with a lot of potential, but I was too cheap to succumb to the 2-3% cut the services take.

- Facebook Events… somewhat works.  I was feeling really about about the response rate for my event, but then looked at many others, and it looks like there’ really only a 5-10% response rate.  I know I’ve rarely responded to mine, but a great easy start for building some buzz.

- Skype – I’ve began doing marraige counseling through it for some friends out of town, but I’ve found it’s almost as good even with local meetings, saving gas and travel time.

- Google phone – I don’t know how many years I’ve been waiting for this one, but rumours are it’s coming along to be released by the end of this year.  Some pics here.  One day I’ll be cool.

- Wordpress, absoutely rocks.  I created the event page with it.  And lightbox plugins bring photos to a whole new level.

- Starbucks wifi – This one applies to Canadians too for once, 2 hours of free wifi with an active starbucks card.  And no, you don’t have to be a bell canada customer.

- After a long while, I just received my first hundred bucks from google ads, but text-link-ads pay out is probably 3-4 times more on average I find.

- Search – through del.icio.us bookmarks and my own blog. I can’t describe how many times I’ve depended on archived clippings and personal writings I’ve long forgotten for talks and ideas.

Jesus and food…

by Lon on June 18, 2008

Just testing out flickr’s blogging feature… and I thought this was a brilliant photo.

It’s amazing how often we find Jesus engaging people over a meal throughout the gospels. Who are you having your next meal with?

up next: some thoughts I’ve been mulling over on whether seminary was worth it all.

Pagan Christianity…

by Lon on May 30, 2008

I finished Pagan Christianity by Frank Viola and George Barna about a month ago.

I can see why people say it’s a controversial book, though I really wasn’t all that shocked by the content at all.  I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Below are some quotes (I swiped from Tony Morgan’s blog) of the book

  • “If the church is following the life of God who indwells it, it will never produce those nonscriptural practices this book addresses.”
  • “Almost everything that is done in our contemporary churches has no basis in the Bible.”
  • “The stunning reality is that today’s sermon has no root in Scripture. Rather, it was borrowed from pagan culture, nursed and adopted into the Christian faith.”
  • “There is not a single verse in the entire New Testament that supports the existence of the modern-day pastor!”
  • “Nothing so hinders the fulfillment of God’s eternal purpose as does the present-day pastoral role.”
  • “Therefore, to our minds, these passages show that every Christian has the right to participate in ‘leading worship’ under Christ’s headship.”
  • “Giving a salary to pastors elevates them above the rest of God’s people. It creates a clerical caste that turns the living body of Christ into a business.”
  • “The one who plants a first-century-styled church leaves that church without a pastor, elders, a music leader, a Bible facilitator, or a Bible teacher… They will bring their own songs, they will write their own songs, they will minister out of what Christ has shown them–with no human leader present!”
  • Your thoughts?

    Conflicted…

by Lon on May 14, 2008

I’ve spent most of my journey with Jesus with a go-until-you-get-a-no philosophy.  The last six years of my life were well planned ahead and have more or less worked out accordingly.  I believe in the sovereignty of God, but I also believe in doing my part, and being diligent with the mind and creativity God has given me.

However, at this particular juncture, I’ve been feeling the need to hear afresh from God.  I’ve been spending dedicated time in prayer, meditation, fasting, all of that… and no booming voice from the sky.  Now, it’s highly likely I’m in denial with the way God’s been speaking in terms of people and opportunities before me, but c’mon God, you’re capable of direct calls…

I’m also conflicted because I barely believe in what I’ve been trained in the last while.  Seminary, ‘professional’ ministry, and the church as it is, bothers me to be honest.  Great for many, but I really don’t know about my place in it all.

Having said that, I love Jesus, being a part of what He’s doing, and the possibilities of His church, more than ever.

I also really need to start finding a way to pay the bills!

    Pulling hearts out…

by Lon on November 2, 2007

indiana jones - pulling heart out

I’ve had this life metaphor in my mind the last while inspired by this unforgettable scene in “Indiana Jones and the temple of doom“.

It’s where this cult leader uses his bare hands, ripping out the heart of another person, and allowing him to watch it still beating in his hands right before he dies.

My mission is to help people reach into the depths of their own being, drawing out their hearts, so they might see it beat with their own eyes.

Only rather than dying, they come even more alive, because they see just how much beauty and wonder God has placed within them.
