Confessions…

by Lon on August 11, 2008

- When I go to starbucks, I’m so cheap, I always order a venti for value, then put it in the fridge and slowly drink it over three days

- I’ve recently began watching old episodes of Party of Five

- I never talk about being in anyway affiliated with the emergent church because I think Mark Driscoll will come and beat me up.

- Our S80 Canon digital camera flew off our car on to the highway this past week, and we saw it as an ‘opportunity’ to replace it with a shiny new Canon Rebel xsi DSLR

- Since my daughter was born, I went from working out five times a week, to zero, and I’ve lost 25 pounds.

- I’m eating expired popcorn as I type this, I generally eat a lot of expired food.

- I’ve never been so convicted of what I’ll be doing with my life, while have no idea about how I’ll be doing it.  Somehow this makes it all the more exciting for me, but probably a little confusing to those around me.

- I probably haven’t had a single decent conversation with 80% of my ‘friends’ listed on facebook this year

- I don’t know many people more hopeful than I am.  I pretend to be cynical sometimes just so people think I’m thoughtful and not naive.

Relationally saturated…

by Lon on March 17, 2008

Ever feel like you have more friends than you have time for?

Ever question if you really have any meaningful friendships at all?

Do you wonder who some of those people are on your facebook account?

How do you pick and choose who you spend time making deep friendships with?

International Facebook Day

by Lon on December 29, 2007

Since I’ve joined facebook, I’ve been horrible with making the most of the connections I’ve established through it. I’m backlogged in replies, and friends I haven’t spoken to in fifteen years, well, I still haven’t connected with them, though we’re now ‘official’ as friends.

Lon Wong's Facebook profile

I declare this Sunday December 30th International Facebook Day. I’m going to dedicate a chunk of my time on it and see where it goes. It’s long overdue and I don’t exactly have pressing deadlines at the moment. Maybe you should do the same!

Stumbleupon, I raise my fist to you…

by Lon on November 29, 2007

There are many people on my contact list that I am completely judicious about sending emails to. I’ve always tried to reserve the tiny moments that I connect with individuals via email to things I consider vastly important, not over extending my welcome.

Well, last night I blew it all when I accidentally allowed stumbleupon to spam over a couple thousand people in my address book.

This includes people who haven’t heard from me for 5-6 years. This includes professors, distant family members, managers, coworkers, friends of friends, people I’ve taught, CEO’s, former business partners, mailing lists, organizations, pastors, seekers, students, church planting directors, bloggers, mentors, childhood friends, advisors, and even people I admire so much that I have yet to email.

And in one momentary click of a button, I’ve emailed all of them to say “hey person I deeply value, come check out this dumb website I rarely use!”. I almost want to spam everyone again to say sorry and please ignore that last email.

I’m just hoping that stumbleupon doesn’t use these emails for any more ridiculousness.

I tried deleting my account in embarrassment and shame, but they have a two-week deletion policy!

I’m so sorry folks. I’m not too pleased either.

Let this be a reminder to all of us about safeguarding our contact lists!

Privilege…

by Lon on November 20, 2007

Interesting conversation with a friend of mine last week.

Often we find ourselves sharing about how we’re absolutely loving where we are in life and the things that we’re involved with.  However, this time I guess I was whining a bit about how I had to preach this past sunday, and then had to preach again on monday as well, and on and on.

And he said to me, ‘you sound like it’s more of a pain than a privilege’.

Right there it stopped me in my tracks and brought me back into the presence of God.  It is a privilege.

You know how when you get so busy, it can suck the joy and the life right out of even what you love?  That was me.

It’s such a privilege to have the opportunities to do what I do.  I’m just so glad I’ve got people reminding me, because I know I’m bound to forget again.
