Love him or hate him, Driscoll’s quite the preacher.
Josh Harris did a series of posts on preaching notes and managed to get Driscoll to share a bit of what he does. Below is a scan of his notes.
I actually do the same thing with the sticky notes. Sometimes I have a small page with a typed outline inserted, sometimes nothing at all.
I never have a problem with content, but it’s the transitions if there’s multiple passages or ideas being conveyed that I need supporting notes for. I have no idea how guys like Erwin McManus or Rob Bell go for hours without peeking.
to Darrin Patrick’s Emerging Conversational, Emerging Attractional, and Emerging Incarnational…
not to mention other labels/streams like catholic, orthodox, purpose-driven, simple, neo and non-reformed, etc, etc, etc.
It seems every now and a group of us have a need to repackage the thing all over again… and I think we need to, because terms do get old, and sometimes words are necessary to bring greater clarity. However, I think we need to just as much reclaim the labels behind the great movements of the church throughout history as well, and not simply abandon them.
Can’t wait to hear what the latest one will be called…
I’ve got a bit too many notes from the conference, but here’s a few random thoughts.
- Kudos to the Willow Creek Association for risking and attempting a new type of conference. I’ve been avoiding conferences for quite a while, but I still do see an incredible need for leaders being continually equipped and inspired.
- It wasn’t a dramatic departure from your typical ‘premiere’ conference but there were some differences such as personalized workshops, regional content, and more interactive moments.
- We had about a quarter of our church attended – and it was helpful in providing some common language and metaphor to work with as a team.
- I was racially profiled, somewhat. I was asked to do a recorded interview on the event, and when I suggested someone else do it, I was told they needed an ‘asian male’.
- Jason Hildebrand delivered one of the best solo performances I’ve ever seen in the church context
- I read Mark Batterson’s “in a pit’ when it first came out (actually Mark sent it to me free as part of his reverse-birthday initiative), but somehow his session on it seemed even more powerful and fresh as it seemed to be hitting me in all the right places.
At The Nova Experience this weekend… Erwin McManus just spoke on Acts 17. I think this must be the 6th time I’ve heard him speak on it. Still, he manages to keep it fresh and squeeze further insight from it.
A few interesting side remarks he made…
He indirectly alluded to Mosaic being like Rob Bell’s Mars Hill having no money, no marketing, and ten thousand people coming, except they only shared the no money part.
Erwin described himself as becoming a top-tier heretic in the blogosphere with the Jon Gordon story last year.
He also shared about someone who had grown up in church all their lives that couldn’t stop wondering if he was going to heaven or Hell. Erwin told him he should just make a decision and decide he was going to hell… and spend the rest of his days making sure no one else goes with him.
The blogosphere’s been abuzz the last few days with Mark Driscoll’s most recent comments at the Convergence conference at the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He talked about different streams of the emerging church today:
The Relevants – Evangelical folks that are being innovative in their methods… he names guys like Donald Miller, Erwin McManus, and Dan Kimball. He’s okay with this crowd.
Reformed Relevants—the theologically conservative and reformed crowd that are still missional – citing himself, those in the Acts 29 network like Matt Chandler, and C.J. Mahaney
Revisionists—those associated with the emergent village who are reinventing church and theologically liberal – naming Brian McLaren, Doug Paggit, and Rob Bell.
I’ve seen this breakdown before by Driscoll in the past, but the new name added this time around was Rob Bell’s. He jokingly said that he was still in therapy due to their churches sharing the same name, Mars Hill. I predicted a year ago that Driscoll’s Mars Hill Seattle would pick a fight with Bell’s Mars Hill in Michigan. I guess it was long overdue.
What’s interesting is that Rob Bell couldn’t preach this week, and had Doug Paggit cover for him, further fueling his association with the emergent dudes, even though he’s never used the label himself.
I’ve learned tremendously from all of these guys, from Mclaren to Driscoll. Only problem is the reformed crowd almost makes me feel embarrassed when I say that.
This is a collection of resources related to the Mosaic movement out of L.A. It has been a tremendous impact on my life and my visions for church planting.
I’ve got a bunch of other resources (CD’s, DVD’s, etc.) that I’ve bought over the years, that I’m tempted to put up, but I don’t want to infringe on any copyright issues. If you’re in the area, you’re more than welcome to borrow them off of me. All the resources here are just what’s readily available on the web. I’ll try to keep this post updated as I stumble across things. Let me know if you’re aware of others.
Here’s a snap of my wife and I as we visit Mosaic LA (at the previous night club) and connect for a moment with Erwin Raphael McManus
