Blogging for Dollars

by Lon on November 5, 2009

money-toilet-paper-roll-250Friends ask me all the time about making money blogging.

First off I don’t blog in order to make money, it’s something I do anyways, much like using toilet paper.

Second of all, I’m a far cry from an A-list blogger and suffer from bouts of inconsistency like the bulk of bloggers out there.

I’ve been with Google Adsense for a number of years and I’m thankful that they’ve helped pay for my hosting bills but I’ll be transitioning from them soon.

Adsense is great if you’re just starting out as it’s all automated and the ads are contextual (although they could work on their algorithms – they keep serving up banners for “Sexy Christian Singles” on my site – ’sexy’ i can understand, but ’single’ I definitely am not)

has also provided some healthy additional revenue. You really need to have a google pagerank of at least 3 and some decent traffic to get accepted as a publisher. If you do, I’d definitely recommend them as they’re fairly unobtrusive.

Sponsors and Affiliates is the route I’d like to begin moving the site more towards.

Primarily because I think it would make the site cleaner and I could partner with individuals and organizations that I feel more aligned with. If you or your organization would like to advertise here contact me and I can send you the current rate sheet.

You can also generate income through affiliate fees. I’d recommend advertising ones you’ve actually used and feel would add value. There’s no perfect host out there, but Site5 has been where several sites I run are hosted. Thesis is an SEO optimized flexible theme that powers SolarCrash is also a phenomenal product with a great affiliate program.

Thesis Theme for WordPress: Options Galore and a Helpful Support Community

If you’re interested in getting your own blog going, designed, connected, and monetized I’ve recently began doing some work through humanity3.com. ‘ministry’ isn’t exactly flooding me with cash lately, so I’m hoping some freelance work compensates a bit.

So there’s you go, that’s how I keep this site afloat while paying some bills.

Half-baked lifestream

by Lon on March 9, 2009

I’ve started yet another blog.  This one’s for true fans, as it’s no-frills and low-thrills.

When I’m not with people, it’s ridiculous how much I am connected to my computer online.  I’ve decided to open up my world a bit further and have a space for unpolished-barely formed thoughts and tidbits.

I’ve found a way to automate it so that every tweet, bookmark, youtube fave, fb update, digg, flickr/picasa upload gets updated onto the new blog.

I’ll also have random stuff i’m researching whether it’s a technical issue or ministry related, and plenty of scripture reflections as well through a quick blogging tool integrated with firefox called scribefire.

I’ll still be blogging plenty here, but halfbaked will be more of the backchannel thoughts that I can’t see most people being all that interested in.  I just dig being able to easily search this stuff for personal reference, plus i’m hoping to monetize it since I’m online putting stuff down most days anyways.

anyhow, enough intro.  Here’s the link http://halfbaked.solarcrash.com

Blog house cleaning…

by Lon on April 30, 2008

I have no idea if anyone still uses technorati, I’ve never promoted it on this site, and I’m not sure what it does for me, but feel free to ‘fave’ the blog if you’re a member there.

Add to Technorati Favorites

If you would like to get added to do a link exchange and get added to my rotating blogroll on the sidebar, just let me know.

A Better Blog?

by Lon on February 24, 2008

It’s shaping up to be another really busy week. But here’s a question for all of you who visit here.

How can I make this blog better?

Content: Would you like to see me post more practical how-to’s? More depth? More questions? More Stories? More controversial topics? More reviews? More resources? More serial posts? More struggles? More convictions? More Focus? More on certain topics? Church planting? Creativity? Leadership? Technology? Faith? Life? Culture? Photos? Something else specific you’d like me to post on?

Format and Style: What are your thoughts on… Ads? Post frequency? Post length? Visuals? Font size? Header? Navigation? Organization? Clutter? Referencing? Interaction/Response time? Linking? Theme? Formatting? Image size, Load times? Other suggestions?

Otherwise, I’d just continue doing whatever the heck I want. So here’s your chance, don’t worry I won’t take any offense to any comments, I think.

* No promises on me doing anything about it, I’d appreciate the feedback!

Virtual relationships…

by Lon on December 15, 2007

Lon in optimus prime helmetI’ve been doing some thinking recently… (I do my best thinking with my Optimus Prime helmet on, video here).

There are so many more people around the world who read my blog than people I connect with regularly in person.

I’m guessing part of this is because if you’re in my regular circles, well, we can catch up just about anytime we want in person. Another part might be due to the anonymity of the internet and how you can peek into someone’s life without them ever knowing about it. And then there’s those of you who’ve contributed to the thousand plus comments here.

Either way, I’m thankful for those of you who might actually think I have something of value to say or share. I’m amazed by the number of you who subscribe to the SolarCrash feed because as much as I’ve tried to narrow the scope of the blogging, you really never know what you’re going to get. So thanks for sticking around.

I’ve also especially appreciate the interaction. The networking has been fantastic, and your comments have been both encouraging and insightful.

I’ll be removing the plugoo instant chat widget I have on the sidebar (just so it doesn’t become a let down when I’m not around), but it’s awesome how with technology today I’ve been able to interact with so many church planters, leaders, and strangers around the world. Just yesterday I chatted with a teen who had been a cutter and was wondering what god had to do with life at all.

You can continue connecting with me further via comments, the contact page, or even via facebook if you’re into that sort of thing.

So again, thank you for reading, thank you for sticking around, thank you for commenting, thank you for clicking the ads, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your day, and although the relationships might primarily be virtual, thank you for the friendships. I’m looking forward to the journey ahead together.

My name is Lon, and I thank God for blogs.

Solar Crash: November round-up

by Lon on December 7, 2007

It always feels odd when people I interact with give me these glowing remarks about who I am and something I’ve just done. The pervading thought in my mind is often how the substance of those comments are so very temporal.

I’ve likely been far better and been far worse, but people gauge you based on what they see of you upfront, or most recently.

I feel the same way with blogs. Current blogging structures are all ordered in reverse chronological order giving the random reader the most recent post rather than the most significant post or posts that resonate with the heart of the blog.

Anyhow, I’m going to begin doing roundups of my best posts each month and year from now on and hopefully that helps give this blog a bit more flare and identity.

Here are November’s picks – feel free to continue interacting on any of them.

- Tantric Preaching
- Pastoring vs. Jesus
- Multi-Ethnicing a church
- I declare – “No Church Sunday”
- Pulling hearts out
