Disagreeing with Scripture

by Lon on March 1, 2010

Have you ever opened the holy scriptures looking for wisdom and something just doesn’t sit right?

Sometimes it’s because it’s exposing some deep uncomfortable truth within ourselves.

Other times, the ‘holy word’ seems flat out wrong.

For example I’ve been preaching through Nehemiah verse by verse over the past year, and while it’s an extraordinary book, it ends on a disappointing thud. Not only because the people of God have abandoned all they worked so hard for, but the human hero of the story, Nehemiah, was a let down in the end as well.

Nehemiah is brash and violent in the last chapter. He attempts to restore order through tearing some families apart and literally giving some men a beating while pulling their hair out (Mark Driscoll calls it a ’scalping’ as if it was cool, but that’s another story). My NIV Men’s edition bible tries to redeem the end of this part of the story commenting on how Nehemiah was courageous in the end confronting sin.

I understand Nehemiah’s good intentions, but I disagree with how he handled the situation. You could call it sinful.

Are there passages in Scripture you personally disagree with? (I can think of plenty).

And what do you do about it?

Some folks like Brian Mclaren might argue we’re simply listening in on a collection of stories in human history, some emphasize Christ as hero, then there’s interpretative techniques like context, word analysis, descriptive vs prescriptive readings of the text… but still.

Are there particular moments where the Scriptures leave you hanging, unsatisfied, and shaking your head?

Driscoll’s NT Guide

by Lon on October 27, 2008

Mark_driscoll_nt_cover I just finished one of Mark Driscoll’s mini-books on the New Testament.  I clocked myself at 50 minutes and 13 seconds, a bit under the book’s one hour projection.

The book does just about all you can in a single hour of study.  It’s definitely a great resource for those early in their faith journey looking for a really high level overview to get started with.

In classic Driscoll style he drives quickly and forcefully through some issues such as the canonization of Scripture.  I can see some people thinking “what about this, or that”, while others feeling assured by Driscoll’s crisp convictions.  But really, how much depth can you go into with an hour-long read?

I’m placing my bets on this becoming a Mark Driscoll commentary Bible in three years.  It’ll probably be based on the ESV, bounded in camouflage leather, and ship with a knife.

Mark Driscoll’s preaching notes

by Lon on October 10, 2008

Love him or hate him, Driscoll’s quite the preacher.

Josh Harris did a series of posts on preaching notes and managed to get Driscoll to share a bit of what he does.  Below is a scan of his notes.

I actually do the same thing with the sticky notes.  Sometimes I have a small page with a typed outline inserted, sometimes nothing at all.

I never have a problem with content, but it’s the transitions if there’s multiple passages or ideas being conveyed that I need supporting notes for.  I have no idea how guys like Erwin McManus or Rob Bell go for hours without peeking.

Bible Study: You vs. Alice Cooper…

by Lon on September 15, 2008

“I go to Bible study on Wednesday mornings – I even teach sometimes – but I’ll still get up on stage and be much scarier than Marilyn Manson.

It doesn’t mean that, as a Christian, you can’t be a rocker or an entertainer. It’s your lifestyle. I never use bad language. That’s not gentlemanly. Alice might slit your throat but he’d never use the F word.”
— Alice Cooper

Well, if God can redeem Alice Cooper…

The year of living Biblically…

by Lon on June 16, 2008

year of living biblicallyI just recently finished “The year of living biblically – one man’s humble quest to follow the Bible as literally as possible” by A.J. Jacobs.

(I listened to the audiobook from the local library over a weeks worth of dishwashing)

I’d recommend this particularly to those in ‘professional’ ministry of any kind. Jacobs is an agnostic, Iand literally wraps his life around the Scriptures for a year.

Some of it is absolutely hilarious, like when he tries to stone an adulterer with pebbles, and some of it is very insightful especially with his Jewish connections.

It’s not worth having as a reference on my bookshelf, but definitely an enjoyable read.

Confessions…

by Lon on May 15, 2008

I’ve been highly unproductive the last few weeks trying to pray and listen for God to speak to me in terms of next steps… problem is He keeps speaking to me in all these other areas of my life.

- I have answers to questions I haven’t honestly wrestled through myself

- I judge people by their actions, but I want them to judge me by my intentions

- I talk a lot about interdependent living, but I plan my life towards independence

- I tend to like conflict, because I think I’m usually right. Conflict becomes just another game I can win.

- I’m done seminary, but I really don’t know the Bible as well as I should

- I’m selective with Scriptures – I’m not sure what to do with the miracles I can’t perform, or even things like the holy kiss.

- I drink gravy straight-up when no one’s looking.

- I tend to minimize serious issues with humor
