Angel or Demon?

by Lon on March 17, 2010

I’ve had this photo on my computer for a number of years (I’d credit it if I could recall where I got it).

It’s always fascinated me.

What are your thoughts?

Do you relate to her?

Everything is broken

by Lon on March 12, 2010

equally broken art
I can’t recall where I was, but I had to take a photo of this art exhibit.

It’s intriguing because it’s making art out of something broken.

It demonstrates the truth that all of creation is broken. At the same time, it’s completely false in how everything is broken in the same places.

Sometimes sweeping statements like everything is broken, doesn’t really help.

We’re all broken, but you’re not broken like I am broken. We don’t fall and crack in the same spots.

Even shared experiences doesn’t allow us assume we’re fractured in all the same ways.

He’s a minority, she’s gay, they’re poor… they must feel like this…

Is that really true?

If people knew how you were truly broken, hurting, and struggling, how might they treat you differently?

Obviously Broken

by Lon on March 11, 2010

Along with beauty, brokenness isn’t spoken of much either.

We’ll talk about it conceptually or in generalities, but the closer we get to specifics, the quicker we seem to want out of the conversation.

People with physical disabilities have always struck a strange chord with me.  Their brokenness is so blatant and transparent for everyone to see.

Do they wish people addressed their obvious brokenness?  Are they tired of people feeling sorry for them?  Do they feel a nagging sense of being robbed of base level human attributes?

And then I see photos like this from the paralympics…

People competing and pursuing dreams despite their conditions…

Would you say they’re any less human? Are their lives any less fulfilling?

And just because they’ve overcome some challenges, it’s not like they are without their continued struggles, hurts, and failures

And then there’s moments of overwhelming beauty

These photos make you think twice the next time you say “I can’t…” don’t they?

Maybe life’s not about how you start the race, or even the massive stumbles along the way, but about what you do with it all, and how you finish.

Some things might be undeniably broken, but it doesn’t always have to be that way.

Pregnant again!

by Lon on November 17, 2009

Speaking of Strong Daughters, this is fresh from our ultrasound today.

And yes, she’s a girl!  That or the boy has a really small wee wee… which just couldn’t possibly be.

That makes three girls in my life now.  I’m officially surrounded, but not surrendering anytime soon.

Amazing new photographer

Stellar by Yvonne Chiu

Okay, I might be a little bit biased. My wife just got into photography and I think she’s awesome. She’s just starting out with an entry level DSLR and borrowed lenses, but I think she’s on to something. Most of her shots are of our daughter, but her ‘portfolio’ will be quickly expanding.

I designed a sleek and simple site at yvonnechiu.com where you’ll find her latest stuff. Drop her a comment and some love, and maybe she’ll take a shot of your pretty mug.

When love comes down…

Solar Crash: Love Comes Down
Collaborative art project responding to “What must love be” by Claudia Hung

What can I say?  I think it was another phenomenal night!  Of the many projects I’m on, the Solar Crash events are definitely one of my favorites.  I’ve written a few thoughts on creating these spaces before here and here.

Some additional reflections…

I intentionally halved the number of performers and artists from the last event and it created a tighter more focused evening that was just as enjoyable

I loved when random people came up to me wondering how on earth something like this comes together

There’s nothing like people from all sorts of backgrounds, cultures, and faiths coming together to creating something beautiful, even if momentary

People keep asking me if I’m an artist, I love writing, but I’d say my craft is more in helping unleash the creative potential of others

I did a once-in-a-lifetime spoken word piece for my wife that night (totally out of my comfort zone)

It was awesome being able to meet in person many people that I had been networked through facebook

Hearing the rumor… “I think he’s a pastor…”

Toronto is brimming with undiscovered creativity

President Obama – Week One

Some breathtaking shots from the innauguration from the boston globe,  HT:Tony

Whenever I’m swamped with work, I think about Obama, and chuckle, now there’s a dude with a lot on his plate!

The Innagural speech was a bit slow for me.  He had way too many issues to address.  One of my favorite lines was when he addressed the leaders of the Muslim world and stated “your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy.”

Barack’s always had a way of appealing to people’s best.

A bulk of his work this past week seems to have been spent reversing and nixing Bush policies.  Much of which was needed.  But again, the question remains of Obama as well, what kind of America will you build that people might judge you by?

Your thoughts?

At-home-dad

by Lon on November 3, 2008

The next three weeks I’m taking care of my daughter full-time.  It’s going to be sweet fun, but next to no work’s going to get done.

I don’t usually have a car during the days, any suggestions on what to do during these weeks of daddy-bootcamp?

Below’s a shot from yesterday morning.  We had our no-church-sunday, which is always great, and I took Stellar to main st. unionville and posed her in the same scenes as our wedding photos that were there.

Stellar leaning on a pillar
