All across Canada today, people are sleeping in and lighting up their BBQ’s for dinner with friends and family.
Supposedly only 22% of people believe there is any historical significance to this day at all.
It’s odd that in a country as multiculturally diverse and independent as Canada, we would have a day dedicated to the birth of a foreign queen who has never stepped foot on our soil. From what I understand even the British don’t have a national public holiday for the Queen’s birthday.
Yet we all love our long weekends, so it’s a tradition we love, even if it’s origins are irrelevant to most of us today.
I wonder if this is how people feel about Christmas. The celebration of some ancient and foreign King who has never touched the soil of our hearts remains a mystery… but we sure do love the shopping deals.
