Pornified…

by Lon on July 30, 2007

A few thoughts from Pornified

Pamela Paul rightly opens her book with a caveat on the language that is used throughout the book… It’s hard to over-stress how graphic and explicit much of the language and content used in her interviews were. There’s lots I wish I had never read.

It is definitely not just the ‘religious’ and conservative that feel that porn is having a tremendously negative impact on our culture

Although Paul went into great depths with many of her interviews, I wish she used a much larger sample size to back her arguments, or at least engaged many more of the statistics already available.

Pornography today is nothing like your daddy’s pornography. Playboy today struggles with it’s brand as being ‘too tame’

I think most of the population that would have the guts to read a book like this would already know how devastating the proliferation of pornography is

What I though was really interesting was the insights of those who were pro-porn

- “If men didn’t have pornography release those urges they could very well “be out raping Girl Scouts”

- Men in pornography need to be pathetic and unattractive so that male viewers can feel “better than their pornographic counterpart”

- 13 year old girls today have porn stars as role models and idols

- “I know some it is objectively horrid, but I have to admit that some of the images have been real sexual turn-ons”

- “I don’t see how any male who likes porn can think actual sex is better, at least if it involves all the crap that comes with having a real live female in your life.”

Children today are born into porn. If you live in urban North America today it is virtually inevitable that your children will be exposed to pornography. What will you be doing about it?

Paul does well to argue that “Pornography at its core is the commercialization of women, turning men into consumers and women into a product to be used and discarded”

I wish more solutions were offered from both a personal and policy level

Along the same note, it appears we’re sharing pornography to the third-world through the One Laptop Per Child program now.

Lazy funks…

by Lon on July 25, 2007

I’m fairly ambitious, but sometimes I get into those lazy funks.

Sometimes I take look one look at my daughter all my angst and passion to change the world just melts away.

Now that I’m a father, I’m excused… or am I?

It’s so easy to simply settle because I’m already more than I ever dreamed of being.

Stellar sleeping
Stellar likes to sleep with her arms up. She’s so hard to resist.

Stellar in her crib
She’s finally found her feet!

Imagine…

by Lon on July 19, 2007

Imagine a self-sustaining and multiplying church of multiplying impact

Imagine a church that is not relevant to culture, but creates a magnetic kingdom culture that the culture-at-large longs to be relevant to

Imagine a church that meets in both the home and in the temple courts (Acts 2:46)

Imagine a church that is known throughout the community for modeling what it means to be truly human

Imagine a church not only of ministers or missionaries, but a church of church planters

Spiritual Activism

by Lon on July 17, 2007

This one is quite old, but it’s one of the most passionate messages I’ve ever heard, actually it’s completely off the hook.

Definitely have a listen, it’s Erwin McManus on prayer.

I’ve also added a few more articles, audios, and videos on the Mosaic resources page.

614 Network – St. Jamestown

by Lon on July 15, 2007

Last night I visited 614 St. Jamestown, a community of faith in the heart of downtown Toronto.

Some highlights I made mental notes of…

I experienced hospitality at it’s finest (how do you argue a church service sandwiched between burgers and cake, followed by nachos and wings?)

I met leaders in the community who relocated into the neighborhood so that they could live, work, and play along side of those they minister to.

I heard from people who understood the demographics of their community from personal involvement and actual stats, rather than with their own preconceptions

Supposedly St. Jamestown is the Calcutta of North America in terms of population density

I saw a church plant committed to holistic renewal of its neighborhood

I discovered what a sub-basement was, and how God and apartment dungeons aren’t such a bad mix

I experienced the word of God as everyone was encouraged to interact with the Scriptures.

I listened to the story of a lady that had been captured and tortured in Ethiopia for her faith

I heard from a man who is using his God-given singing abilities to bless others in contexts beyond the church

I met a much older gentleman who continues to pour his life into others through gut-wrenching work as a chaplain

I spoke with a highly educated man from Russia that found himself simply looking for acceptance as he immigrated here

I met a young lady who took a step of faith coming all the way from France and finding herself falling in love with the people she served

I saw children be children

I saw different denominations working together

I saw a community enjoying life together.

I saw people of all sorts of cultures, experiences, and opinions with nothing in common other than Jesus and a neighborhood.
