I pitched the name Shaft to my wife if we have a boy. The lyric from the Isaac Hayes theme from the show Shaft says it all,

Deanna, i definitely want a strong name. Thanks for the Gluteus Maximus warning. But max is definitely a solid name. I’ve been to http://www.babynames.com it’s quite the resource. I’d like something less common that’s for sure.

Selah ( Hebrew: סלה) meaning “pause, reflection”, within the context of a prayer or psalms, is similar in purpose to Amen in that it stresses the importance of the preceding passage.

In this way, Selah is thought to imply that one should pause and reflect on what has been said. Alternatively, Selah may be a musical notation (thus explaining its use throughout Psalms) or may mean “forever”, as it does in some places in the liturgy (notably the penultimate blessing of the Amidah).

Matt (but you pronounce it James) Can’t you hear the teacher in class. Matt Schmidt – Umm it’s pronounced James. What do you mean it says right here Matt. I know I know. My parents are crazy – they said just sound it out MMMjames.

Last I had some options of names that were actually noises. So make some kind of noise and throw some letters together and you have the last few names on my list. Thus a statement to your child would sound like “Go clean your room (insert noise) or (insert noise) did you take the trash out?”

I’m partial to Maximus…we almost named Max that…but people always followed it up with Gluteus…clever.

We went back and forth between Samuel Alexander and Maximilian Martin…you know which we settled on. It means Greatest Warrior.

We chose a boy name and girl name, and didn’t find out what the sex was. But as we got closer and closer to the due date I just was so unsettled on the girl name. Turns out we didn’t need it!

The best baby name book I’ve seen is Baby Names Around the World. It gives you the background and meaning to over 50,000 names.

But I also think you’ve done well to start looking at names of passion, character and action. Too many parents miss out on the opportunity to gift their children with a deeply meaningful name and the reason that name was chosen. Personally, I like Freeman and Sashimi. This coming from a person in a chain of people named after a green space of land.
